Now that the January transfer is over, Barcelona Sporting Director Deco will continue to focus on their contract innovations. The Blaugrana have tied the future of various of their cornerstone players, but now have decisions to make about the future of other players with less clear future.
Frenkie de Jong is at the top of that list. Barcelona has reportedly made a goal of them to ensure that none of their players will enter the last year of their contract, with the exception of veterans Inigo Martinez and Robert Lewandowski. Their intention is that those players who no longer have a contract in 2026, extend their contracts, or they will look for a sale in the summer.
In addition to De Jong, Barcelona will have to make decisions about Inaki Pena, Pablo Torre, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia and Hector Fort. Wojciech Szczesny is expected to return to retirement at the end of the season.
However, as one of the highest earners in the team, De Jong's business will attract a lot of attention. After Barcelona had withdrawn his renewal offer, to which the Dutchman had not responded, they are expected to discuss reduced conditions with De Jong, who lost his start spot to Marc Casado after five months. Sport says that the camp of De Jong and Barcelona are also aware of Saudi Aarabia in him – two of the largest parties of the competition are interested in him …
They are expected to come in with an offer for him in the summer, and if Barcelona decides against a renewal, or there can be none, they will insist on a movement to continue. De Jong, however, is not entirely convinced by the idea of moving to the middle and allegedly wants to stay in Barcelona. If De Jong decides to stay without renewing his deal and play his contract, then Barcelona will threaten to send him to the stands.
