Real Madrid honour Marcelo with emotional farewell at the Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid gave an emotional tribute to the legend of the Marcelo club on Saturday with Atletico Madrid on Saturday after the Brazilian's retirement.

His sons, Enzo and Liam, joined the legendary left side and appeared in a full Santiago Bernabeu for the starting whistle.

England Jude Bellingham was also seen with the standing ovation, while the Brazilian posed with a framed Galacticos sweater given by the club's veteran Luka Modric.

Marcelo showed respect for the 39-year-old veteran after they had already been ten successful teammates in the Madrid team.

The 26-year-old Brazilian previously spent 15 stunning years in the capital Spain and won an incredible 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles.

He stepped on the field just after the Los Blancos newcomer Kylian Mbappe received the Player of the Month Award for January, for his eight goals in nine games during the month.

Marcelo was seen for a photo with the entire team – including injured Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and David Alaba – who later received hugs from former teammates Lucas Vazquez and Dani Ceballos.

The Madrid icon made a total of 546 performances and became the third foreign player with the most games for the club, behind Karim Benzema and Roberto Carlos.

In 2006 a young and inexperienced Marcelo joined the Spanish club of Fluminense, after he had previously played only 30 senior games.

However, he quickly achieved a regular starter role in the team after the departure from Carlos to Fenerbahce in 2007.

One of his most memorable goals comprises his Thunderbolt against Atletico Madrid in the 2013-14 Champions League final in Lisbon, so that Los Blancos lifts their 10th European cup.

Marcelo's time as a starter in the team came with the arrival of Ferland Mendy in the Santiago Bernabeu in 2019, which was seen as a more reliable option for the defense of Los Blancos.

He left as an icon in 2022 and will be remembered because of his charismatic personality and elegant control over the ball.

The left side withdrew from football in his Boyhood Club Fluminense – after a new relocation of Olympiacos in March 2023 – 68 performances and scored five goals.

In a video on social media that announced his retirement in a video on social media, Marcelo said: 'At the age of 18, Real Madrid came to knock on my door and I arrived here. Now I can proudly say that I am a real Madrileno.

'16 seasons, 25 titles, five champion competitions, one of the captains … and so many magical nights in the Bernabeu. What a trip! Madrid is a unique club.

'Returning to Fluminense meant giving back to the club what they initially gave me. Helps them to win three titles, including the Copa Libertadores, and leaving an inheritance for the next generation at the Marcelo Viera Stadium.

'My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give football. Thank you for everything. '

Moreover, the president of the Real Madrid Florentino Perez later added: 'Marcelo is one of the largest left -wing backs in the history of Real Madrid and World Football, and we have had the privilege of enjoying him for a long time.

“He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and will always be his home.”
