Former Manchester United -midfielder Scott McTominay now has more competition goals than Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined this season, it can be revealed.
McTominay spent more than two decades playing for United from the academy to the first team, making him more than 250 performances before leaving his boy's club for Italy in the summer.
The 28-year-old came to Napoli in a £ 25.7 million deal in the transfer window and came alive there as a duck for water. Given license to wander from midfield, he scored seven times in 23 games in all competitions.
His strike against Udinese in Serie A on Sunday brought his competition in total for the season to six – goals that United could now do. Ruben Amorim continues to look for a solution for the target problems of his team, but continues to find one.
Hojlund and Zirkzee have struggled for shape in united colors. The first arrived in a £ 72 million deal in the summer of 2023 and since then scored 23 times in 74 games, while Zirkzee has found the net five times since his summer in 36 games.
When it comes to League promotion, Mctominay is now clear this year. Zirkzee has three Premier League attacks to his name, while Hojlund has two this season – an uncomfortable look for United.
After he was injured the season, Hojlund found the back of the net in his second start of the campaign in the competition. The DANE yielded the winner in the 2-1 win over Brentford in October after Ethan Pinnock had canceled the opener of Alejandro Garnacho.
He was familiar to start matches by Erik ten Hag, and then Amorim, but struggled for the goal. His strike in the 3-2 defeat of Nottingham Forest was a comfort and he has not scored in the nine games since then.
In the meantime, Zirkzee went to a flyer after his arrival of £ 36.5 million in the summer, so that the only goal of the Red Devils on their 1-0 opening day was worked on Fulham.
At that time, however, he did not score for 11 more races for a brace versus Everton at the beginning of December – and he has not scored since then.
Amorim has gone as far as Kobbie Mainoo tries to find a solution – since an academy -graduate midfielder play instead of £ 100 million in strikers. Ironically, MCTominay is also a graduate midfielder from the Academy.
The Scot is in a title race and centrally in the Antonio Conte system. United did not move him, he could have been an important gear for what Amorim is trying to do.
