VAR stops working during Ipswich vs Man United PL game: what happens next?
Referee Anthony Taylor was unable to call on his Video Assistant Referee for part of Sunday's match at Portman Road.
Sunday's Premier League match between Ipswich Town and Manchester United was notable because it was Ruben Amorim's first game in charge of the Red Devils, but also because VAR was unavailable for a short time in the first half.
Why did VAR stop working during Ipswich vs Manchester United?
Referee Anthony Taylor brought United captain Bruno Fernandes and his Ipswich counterpart Sam Morsy to the center of the pitch to explain that the technology would not be used after they were told a fire alarm had gone off in Stockley Park, an industrial estate in West London where the Premier League's VAR hub is located (and from where all VAR interactions take place).
What happens if the VAR no longer works?
If VAR is not available, Premier League matches will go ahead as normal, although match officials will have to remain old-fashioned and make decisions based solely on their own judgement. Music to the ears of many fans, players and managers, if the reactions on social media were anything to go by…
Taylor had no major drama in the time away from VAR, although Ipswich's Omari Hutchinson did cancel out Marcus Rashford's early opener with a fine goal just before half-time.
