David Moyes stated that Goodison Park had witnessed a “suitable” finish of the last Merseyside Derby on the ground when Everton claimed a dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
Liverpool seemed to get up to win the 120th meeting between the parties in the famous old stadium, after goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah rose 2-1.
But James Tarkowski defeated Alisson with a wild volley deep in the stop time to generate wild scenes among the home fans, where the goal was confirmed after a long VAR review.
Timed After 97 minutes and eight seconds, Tarkowski's strike is the last record in a Merseyside Derby in the Premier League.
It is also the second most commonly awarded by Liverpool in the competition in general, after the goal of Robin van Persie for Arsenal in April 2011 (97 minutes and 10 seconds).
Many Everton fans stayed in the stands long after full-time to serenade their players, with Moyes describing the experience as one of his most memorable as a manager.
“Mental probably summarizes it. A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside Derby and score in the last minute,” he said TNT Sports.
“We would have liked to win the game, but on 2-1 down I just thought we would probably not come back, it seemed that Liverpool would keep us out.
“We worked hard, kept it, we probably had more attempts in the second half than the first, but did not have the quality to get a good enough finish … but Tarky did it, that was the one who there really mattered.
“To score that goal, it will be remembered in history.”
Asked where the game achieved under his experiences from opposite Liverpool, Moyes added: “It was above that. I think the night was made to make something happen.
“It wasn't the best football game, but it was a bit of a throwback. A little scrappy.
“Liverpool is an incredibly talented team, so we had to find a way not to make that gap that big tonight and I thought we did well.”
The drama continued after full-time when Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were shown red cards after a scuffle, in which Liverpool coach Arne Slot also saw red after exchanging words with referee Michael Oliver.
Asked about those incidents, Moyes said: “I am disappointed about Doucoure because we need it, we are currently on numbers. We have to be careful with what we do.
“Discipline is sometimes never easy in these games and tonight was a game that is fairly easy to send.”
