Bayern hope to get Kimmich contract extension ‘over the finish line’

Bayern Munich sports director Max Eberl says he is hopeful that they can get the contract extension of Joshua Kimmich “over the finish line”.

Bayern recently extended the contracts of Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala, who have signed his new deal that will hold him in the club until 2030.

Kimmich's current contract, which he signed in August 2021, will end at the end of this season.

The German has made 424 performances in all competitions for Bayern since he came to RB Leipzig in 2015, scored 43 goals and registered 114 assists at that time.

He helped the club to win seven Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal medals, six DFL-Supercups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

“We have done our work little by little. We had very good discussions with Joshua. With the expansion we clearly showed what our idea is,” Eberl emphasized.

“We know exactly what we want, Josh knows what we want. Now I hope we can get that over the finish.

“He wants to stay in Bayern Munich, he wants to win the Champions League. If he didn't want to stay, we wouldn't talk.”

Bayern is currently at the top of the Bundesliga, with an eight-pointed lead over defending champion Bayer Leverkusen, which they kept a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

Vincent Kompany's side was on the back foot when Leverkusen penetrated a goal. Bayern only succeeded in two shots, both of which came in the second half, but neither was on goal.

Leverkusen is only the second team that does not allow a shot at target in a Bundesliga match that (since 2004-05) against Bayern against Bayern, previously only Wolfsburg has registered.

While Bayern only generated 0.05 expected goals (XG), they defended loyal to the threat of Leverkusen. The hosts created 2.16 xg of 15 shots, touched the woodwork with two of them and could not find a way.

Neuer, however, was happy with the defensive effort of the team, because it ensured that their lead at the top of the table was not cut by the men of Xabi Alonso.

“We are happy with the result,” Neuer said. “We didn't make much, Leverkusen had a good day and put pressure on us.

“It was hard to find the right space. We are going home with a point, which might be happy. But in the past it was also the other way around.

“Leverkusen started aggressively, our training in the defense has paid off. We had many players on the back, and we did well. The important goal today was that we did not lose the game, and we did.”
