Howe issues challenge that couldn’t make Isak transfer feelings any clearer
Alexander Isak has been challenged by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to become the best striker in the world.
A month ago, Howe threw down the gauntlet to his Swedish top scorer and demanded he play at the top of his game before considering a new contract. That sparked Isak into action and he has scored in his last four games at Newcastle, including a three-match winning streak.
The 25-year-old is one of the most complete forwards after returning to full fitness after injury. He has been linked with a move to Arsenal or to a Champions League club abroad, but Newcastle are under no pressure to sell any of their crown jewel players in January or the summer.
Instead, Howe wants Isak to fire Newcastle to Europe this season, saying: “He is building momentum into his season and has scored some big goals for us recently. I think his overall performance has continued to improve.
“He went to Sweden and played very well. I'm really happy with how he's looking internationally too, to continue that good form. I think the fact that I'm a striker, even though I haven't been one myself, but from my experience it's all about confidence and how you feel.
“Alex has undisputed qualities. I would put him right at the top of the list when it comes to the world strikers currently playing.”
Asked if he could be the best in the world, Howe added: “I think his potential is great. I think that really, if he can continue on the path that he has been on the last few seasons, he can continue and prove himself as one of the best in the world.
“Without putting pressure on him, that would be my target if I were him.
“I think we're entering the business end in the sense that December is always full of great challenges and opportunities, that's how I see it, so that we can consolidate our position and hopefully move forward in positive territory.
“But there are no guarantees, we know how tight the Premier League is this year and every game is difficult. We have no illusions that there are easy games at home or away, we don't underestimate anyone. But we stand behind ourselves and this will be an important point in our season.”
Callum Wilson is close to returning to support Isak's goalscoring side after a long spell away. He is nearing the end of his contract and could be cashed in in January.
But Howe said: “Is there a scenario where Callum could stay beyond his current deal? Of course it is. Callum has excellent qualities. I know everyone in football has a short memory, but look at what Callum has done since I've been here. When he was on the field he was incredible.
“That Champions League season, the way he and Alex worked together, to help each other and help the team achieve brilliant performances and results, was brilliant to see. Now for a long time we have lost the ability to play them together or help them share the load.
“That was a real frustration for me, and I know it for the players themselves. My wish for Callum is only that he comes back consistently fit. If he does that, there will be no doubt about his qualities. In addition, the future will take care of itself. I don't necessarily get too bogged down in that or worry about it, it's more about helping Callum in the short term.
