Slot will lean on Liverpool’s title winners for Premier League run-in

Arne Slot plans to use the experience of the title-winning experience of his team to help Liverpool with their Premier League run-in.

Liverpool travels to Aston Villa on Wednesday, hoping to build on their 2-1 win over Wolves last Sunday and to build a 10-point gap to Arsenal in the rankings.

But there were signs of nerves after the break in Anfield, where the Reds did not try shot in a whole half of a Premier League competition for the first time.

Slot, however, said that, despite the questions about the team, he said he will lean on the players involved in Liverpool's titles in 2019-20 -20.

From those who are still left of their first Premier League title in 30 years under Jurgen Klopp, Slot has a lot of experience to turn in his side.

Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah were all part of that team five years ago.

“We lean a lot on the players. We train with them, we try to prepare them. We have a pre-match meeting to prepare them in the best possible way,” said Slot.

“You lean on the players – how much working speed they want to do, how well they implement the game plan, how do they adapt to what the other team does?

“I think it helps you if a team or a player has already won something, but don't make that too big because you still have to play for it.”

But Slot has not underestimated the task for his team, despite the fact that he had a formidable record on the road since he had arrived in Liverpool at the start of the season.

Indeed, the Reds still have to lose a Premier League match under lock, with its 13 games (W9 D4) the outright longest undefeated start on the road by a manager in the history of the competition, the record of John Gregory surpassed Villa van 12 matches from March to November 1998.

The side of Unai Emery was also held by 10-man Ipswich Town in their last Premier League meeting and are ninth in the table after 25 games of their campaign.

“I see it as 13 games to play and the next game as the most important. Villa gone, such as Wolves at home, is another difficult game,” said Slot.

“They have a great home record, maybe even more when they play in the evening, so we know this will be a challenge.

“But we have quite an OK record this season. We have also done very well this season, so it's a competition for everyone to look forward to.”

Villa also won only one of their last 14 Premier League matches against Liverpool (D2 L11), a 7-2 victory in Villa Park in October 2020, but this exact match ended last season with 3-3-the Reds did not fail Win consecutive road races against the Villans since December 2004.
