In recent months, Frenkie de Jong has succeeded in turning his fortunes in Barcelona – to the point that he is now a regular starter for head coach Hansi Flick, who had previously been familiar with Marc Casado. This not only benefited him on the field, but his chances of staying at the club in the long term have also increased considerably.
It is no secret that there have been problems between Barcelona and De Jong in recent years with regard to his contract. The club has tried to reduce its salary to alleviate their financial burdens, but so far there has been little success in this department, and this has led to a strong speculation about a possible departure.
De Jong's current deal, who sees him as one of the highest earners in the club, ends at the end of next season, and earlier in the campaign he made a proposal that Barcelona had put on the table. At that stage the negotiations were at a low point, but things now look promising.
It has been reported that De Jong is now willing to sign a new contract and Barcelona will make an offer if he will continue to impress in the coming weeks. Sports director Deco even lays the foundation for negotiations, because he met the Dutchman agent on Tuesday, according to Jijantes (via Sport).
Deco is described as an “informal meeting” with Ali Dursun, De Jong's agent. It is not clear what has been discussed, but the report states that the idea with the 27-year-old is for conversations about a new contract to start in the spring, which means that the start of the trial has been removed for a few weeks. Nevertheless, there is trust for a friendly agreement on this.
