‘I rejected Newcastle – now I could end up joining Arsenal or Chelsea’

Hugo Ekitike rejected a Deadline daily movement to Newcastle United in the transfer window of 2022 January – but he could now be affiliated with one of the two London clubs.

Eintracht Frankfurt Striker Ekitike is linked to Chelsea and Arsenal, with the interest that will increase as the summer window approaches. Both Premier League clubs would see him as an alternative signing for Alexander Isak, which currently shines for Newcastle with 17 goals and five assists so far in the 2024/25 season.

However, the Magpies could have had both in-shape attackers in their books, because the French attacker rejected a last-minute January relocation from FC Reims to the Premier League three years ago. At that time it was confirmed that the French club had accepted a deadline day offer of £ 25 million – later rose to £ 33 million – from Newcastle for the 19 -year -old.

However, the relocation depended on the agreement of personal conditions with the player. Ekitike then decided to stay in the club until the end of the season, where Reims-President Jean-Pierre Caillot claimed that both the club and the player “share the feeling that there is still a piece of history to write together”.

Months after rejecting a move to Newcastle, Ekitike was announced in July 2022 as the latest signing of PSG. He revealed that a conversation with PSG's football adviser Luis Campos convinced him to join the Ligue 1 champions.

In an interview with Le Parisien, Ekitike said: “I had an appointment with Luis that meant a lot to me. It was not so long ago. We talked a lot, he is someone I really considered. I wanted to come to PSG earlier earlier , but it convinced me even more.

“I did not put everything aside that Newcastle did to get me to come. If I had to go abroad, I would have gone there. But if PSG wants you and you are French, you can't refuse.”

Since then, the 22 -year -old 33 performances for PSG has made it permanently – scoring and assisting four goals – before he came to Frankfurt in January 2024. Last summer he joined the Bundesliga Club in a deal worth £ 13.6 million (€ 16.5 million), and excels in Germany.

Ekitike has scored 21 goals and helped eight times in 48 performances for Frankfurt, who attracted interest from Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca – two managers who need a proven striker – according to prison foreign countries.

It seems that Ekitike may finally make his switch to the Premier League in what a double blow could be for Newcastle, who will be afraid of increasing the interest in Isak if they do not secure the Champions League football for the next season.
