It is no secret that supporters of Atletico Madrid no longer have much love for Thibaut Courtois after his move from 2018 to Bitter Rivals Real Madrid. Earlier this season, the Belgian keeper became the target of missiles during the Madrid Derby, and that led to a partial stadium closure in the Metropolitano.
On the back of that incident, Courtois was involved in a public words war with his former manager, Diego Simeone. The couple collaborated between 2011 and 2014 during the 'Keeper's Extended Loan spell at Atleti, and he reminded memories of the Argentinian head coach during a recent interview with Rio Ferdinand, according to Diario ALS.
“The energy comes from its character, he talks a lot to the team. I remember that for a final against Real Madrid – I think Atleti had not defeated them for about twelve years, I had a conversation with him and mono burgos and he told me: 'You're the best, tomorrow you go to break it ! . ' And you would go to bed if … boahh! And you think about it.
“On competition day he would play a video of a movie with a speech. I have always found these things so that you got something out of yourself. The players were above his level, and they could do it because he was tactically very good. He knew how to activate ourselves. He is a special coach. And I think he always finds a way to reinvent himself, because he has been there for many years and he is still great. I would like to see him in a different country, but I imagine that he is happy there. '
It is no surprise that Simeone had such an effect on Courtois, since he probably made such a lasting impression of the vast majority of the players he managed during his long enchantment that was in charge of Atletico Madrid.
