Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk points the finger at team-mate as Arne Slot speaks out

Liverpool missed the chance to open a 10-point lead over Arsenal in the race for the Premier League crown.

The Reds played a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in Villa Park, but could have won the game if Darwin Nunez could convert a golden chance from just six meters.

The men of Arne Slot, however, are still in pole position prior to the Titelloop, with the gap between them and Arsenal now on eight points. Liverpool is also a step closer to the discovery of whom they will be confronted in the last 16 of the Champions League after the last round of Play-Off matches was played on Wednesday evening.

Here, Spiegelvoetbal is the latest news from Anfield completed prior to another huge weekend in the Premier League …

Van Dijk points the finger

Virgil van Dijk admitted that Liverpool blew a golden opportunity to place a serious daylight between himself and Arsenal at the Premier League top.

The Reds took the lead in the first half by Mohamed Salah before goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins turn the game upside down.

Trent Alexander-Arnold saved the hour to restore the parity for Liverpool, who had opportunities to win and to open a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

Darwin Nunez missed a huge chance of six meters – and Van Dijk was the first to say that Liverpool wasted their chance to defeat Villa and to strengthen their position in the Premier League Titrace.

Slot speaks on Nunez

Darwin Nunez was “pretty down” in the dressing room in Liverpool after missing a golden chance to win the match against Aston Villa, says Arne Slot.

The Reds striker could have won the game with the scores level at 2-2, but could not convert from close-range because both parties shared the points.

And Slot admitted: “We had a number of very good moments, scored the first goal of a good urgent moment, but we took it the way the game went and they came back in the last minute (when Donyell Malen shot wide).

“But if you look at the opportunities we had in the second half to go in the front, you can understand that there is one person in the dressing room who feels quite down, and you know who it is, I think.”

Reds Leather Champions League -Lot

Liverpool is a step closer to discover their next opponents prior to Friday's draw for the last 16 phase of the Champions League.

The Reds had four potential opponents at the start of the week – but that has now been reduced to just two after the conclusion of the second round of play -off fixtures.

They will be confronted with Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica after the former aggregated Brest has made 10-0, with the other team that plays Barcelona.
