How does the Champions League draw draw?

The teams that ended in the top eight positions during the group stage received a Bye in this round. As part of the Play -Off Round Trekkking, these teams were linked to two potential opponents of those from the ninth to 24th, according to a new couples system.

For example, Ruben Amorim's United finished third during the competition phase and were therefore attracted to play one of the four potential opponents of the sides that ended in the 13th, 20th, 14th and 19th – who all play each other in the two -legged knockout phase.

They will play one of the two winners of these luminaires and are linked to the fourth placed team, Spurs, who encounters the other knockout winner. Being connected together means that both United and Ange Postecoglou's side cannot be confronted with the final, they were allowed to claim.

Potential round of 16 games:

Lazio or Athletic Club vs Ferencváros/Viktoria Plzen or Porto/Roma

Manchester United of Tottenham vs AZ Alkmaar/Galatasaray or Midtjylland/Real Sociedad

Frankfurt or Lyon vs Union SG/Ajax or PAOK/FCSB

Olympiacos or Rangers vs Twint

The teams that ended in the top eight of the competition will receive a Bye and will also be sown, so that they can play at home in the second stage of their matches. There is no protection based on nationality, which means that teams from the same country can face each other. The first stage of the round of 16 games takes place on March 6, while the second stage will be held on March 13.
