Flick: Players and coaches must protect LaLiga referees

Hansi Flick insists that Laliga referees should be protected by players and coaches after Jose Munuera Montero was taxed because he has shown Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham a red card.

Montero was forced to conclude his Instagram account after receiving tens of thousands of responses, including insults and death threats, after he had shown Bellingham a red card for the aiming of error language towards him during Madrid's draw with Osasuna last week.

Bellingham received a suspension of two games, even though the referee had misunderstood him while spoke to himself in English.

The incident has led to a fierce debate about the treatment of referees in Spain, and Flick believes that everyone who is connected to Laliga must do more to protect officials.

“It is very important to have the referees and at the moment what they are doing here in Spain with them [referees] Is incredible. You also have to think about their families, “said Flick for the trip from Barca to Las Palmas on Saturday.

“Everyone makes mistakes … I think it is the responsibility of the coaches and also of the players to protect them.

“Now we have the VAR, and we have to trust it. The federation must show how strong it is. This is very important … we have to change these things a bit because they [referees] are human. “

Barcelona currently Top Laliga, level at 51 points with second place Madrid and a point for Atletico Madrid in third place.

Barcelona is unbeaten in their last nine in all competitions (W6 D3) and scored an average of 3.44 goals per match (31 goals on aggregated).

They did not go 10 games or more without losing home since September 2022, when they went 15 games between January and September 2022 (W12 D3).

Las Palmas, however, wants to do the Double Double competition over Barcelona for the first time in the top flight, after he won the Reverse Fixture 2-1 in November 2024.

Barca also organizes Atletico in the first stage of their Copa del Rey Semi-Final on Tuesday, and Flick said he could rotate his players when they are dealing with Valencia.

“We still have a training session today and we will decide later [about resting players]. We always focus on the next game, but we also have to think of Atletico. The important game is Las Palmas, “he said.

“The team is at a good physical level, but we also have to think about the following games. There is the international break [next month] And our players also play … we need to know what the players can give us. “
