La Liga confirm fixture changes to boost Champions League chances

La Liga has confirmed an updated fixture schedule prior to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg matches.

The 'Big Three' of Spain have all reached the knockouts with Real Madrid opposite local Rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona combined with Benfica.

With UEFA who now confirms their plans for both legs of the eight games, La Liga followed the example, with a quick renewal that is needed to make a decent rest period between competitions possible.

Real Madrid organizes Atletico Madrid in their first stage on Tuesday 4 March with Barcelona in action in Lisbon the next day – and both games start at 9 p.m. [8pm [GMT].

Gameweek 26 in La Liga will now reflect that, with Los Blancos away from Real Betis on Saturday 1 March, on the same day as Atletico Madrid host Athletic Club in the Spanish capital.

With Barcelona that organizes Real Sociedad on Sunday 2 March, all three clubs have a clear gap of 48 hours for each game day.

Barcelona organizes Benfica on Tuesday 11 March, with an 6.45 p.m. [5:45pm] Start as Atletico Madrid Welcome Carlo Ancelotti's team at the Estadio Metropolitano the next day in a CET of 9 p.m. [8pm [GMT] kick -off.

La Liga Games for the weekend of 9/10 have not yet been confirmed, but it is expected that they will follow a similar pattern as the above.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are both at home, respectively to Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano, with Atletico Madrid on the road at Buren Getafe.

The decision was made to try to facilitate the congestion of the fixture on players in a crunch point of the season in the lines of what is being offered in the Premier League and Ligue 1.

The next FIFA International window also starts from 17 March with Spain opposite the Netherlands in the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Nations League, with competitions in Rotterdam and Valencia.
