The one thing left on Lionel Messi’s bucket list

The Inter Miami Forward has already spoken about his desire to return to Barcelona and wants a final Spotify Camp Nou -performance before retiring.

Now 37 years old, there is very little that Lionel Messi did not do in his shimmering career. An eight-time balloon d'Or winner, Messi has won 12 league titles, four Champions League, two Copa Americas and, The Crowning Glory, the World Cup in 2022.

Since he moved to the United States, he has added two more trophies to bring all time to 45, making him the most decorated player in the history of professional football. However, there is one more thing about his sporting bucket list.

Messi spent 21 years with Barcelona and has already indicated that his desire to go back to the city after ending his gaming career. Now reports in Argentina suggest that he could be back earlier.

Journalist Alex Candal told DSports that Messi wants to play in the new redeveloped stadium of Barcelona before retiring: “I can't leave football without playing in the new Camp Nou.”

When does Lionel Messi return to Barcelona?

During his time at the Blaugrana, Messi now illuminated the camp for 17 glorious seasons. The Argentinian is the record maker of the club of all time and top scorer, who played 778 times for Barca.

But the Camp Nou that Messi left is no longer, after the club had started a huge stadium renovation project after the end of the 2022/23 season. The club had hoped to return after a year, but they are still due to important delays that play in the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Company. The works will be completed by June 2026, with the total costs of the project currently at $ 984 million.

Although it is not complete, the club hopes to be back in Camp Nou later this year, where the club is planning to return for the 2025/26 season.

Regarding Messi's return, there seems to be little chance that he signed for the team, so a last Camp Nou-appear would probably take place in a friendly game between Barcelona and Inter Miami, or perhaps the national team of Argentina. However, inter Miami from Messi are involved this summer with the Club World Cup and the MLS calendar year schedule means that it is difficult to find the time.

One option can be a friendly competition in the early 2026. LaLiga teams have a winter break that usually covers the first ten days of January, the point at which MLS teams return for preseason training. Barcelona has not yet commented on the possibility of welcoming Messi for a one -time game, but would certainly have the chance to give their biggest player ever a good broadcast.
