Aaron Ramsdale could complete a shock movement to Chelsea using a relegation release clause.
The goalkeeper of England completed a move to Southampton last summer, which could be worth £ 25 million. But it has not been the season that Ramsdale or the saints have wanted.
The south coast side has only collected nine points on their return to the Premier League. Ramsdale, 26, has admitted 42 goals in just 19 Premier League matches that missed part of the season because of an injury, while he has only two clean sheets.
With Southampton who looks destined for an immediate return to the championship, Ramsdale could leave despite a contract that runs until 2028. According to Talksport, a relegation release clause has been written in the goalkeeper's deal at St Mary de Club is degraded.
And there is already interest in the former Sheffield United Stopper. Chelsea apparently has a long -term interest in him, while Bournemouth is also connected in the past.
The London side already has a number of keepers in their books, although neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen have done enough to convince Enzo Maresca. Ex-Chelsea star Jason Cundy has encouraged his former club to take a step for Ramsdale.
“The keeper has turned out to be a huge problem for Chelsea,” said Cundy on Talksport. “Jorgensen dropped an absolute dolly against Aston Villa.
“We have done enough to get a point there and the keeper made a Howler, it was devastating for Chelsea. I would certainly have Ramsdale. That is an improvement. Kelleher in Liverpool is another thing they look at.
“It is clear that the situation of the goalkeeper has been a bit of a disaster. Sanchez got the gloves and in the past three months it was quite clear that he is suffering. There have been many goals and mistakes.
“I think they want to replace Sanchez unless they think [Djordje] Petrovic that is on loan is good enough. But it has clearly been a problem throughout the season and something has to change. “
Chelsea has already agreed a deal to sign another new keeper, even before a possible step for Ramsdale. Mike Penders will complete a relocation of £ 17 million from the Belgian side Genk this summer.
After their collision with Southampton – a match in which Ramsdale was – Chelsea are back in action against Copenhagen next weekend. Southampton has some time to wait for their next game that will come against Liverpool next weekend.
