Arne Slot greeted the monster mentality on his side when Liverpool clearly moved 13 points in the Premier League title after they drove past Newcastle last night.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister scored in both half while the Reds roared for Arsenal with 10 games to go. There is still a quarter of the campaign to go, but it feels like the title race is already over before even March rolls around.
Liverpool defeated Champions Manchester City on Sunday for a week's victory from a draw with Aston Villa who had questioned their title references. Slot said, “I think what was the most impressed for me, the mental force in both games.”
Liverpool has now played five major matches in 15 days, scored 10 goals, gave five, won three and pulled two. The run started with a draw with Everton for a victory over wolves, drawing with Villa and now victories against City and Newcastle.
They are now undefeated in 24 games to go with 10.
Slot added: “After Everton and Wolves begin to interrogate us a little, but if you get a lot of compliments, you will become complacent. “We were not perfect, but the mentality was great again.”
Reds boss Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshof were not on the touchline after receiving a ban from two games for their behavior after the recent Merseyside Derby.
Slot said, “It's less emotional because you don't feel the emotions or energy of the players.”
Liverpool will now enjoy a rare weekend off, with players who get two days to recover before the attention turns to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. And although Slot is grateful for the short break, he admitted that it was a blow to the BIT-Part players who had had the opportunity to play.
Asked if the break was a luxury, he said: “That is true. Although I would have liked to play because people like Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah, Federico Chiesa, have been really good for them to have a game. But unfortunately we have lost plymouth and so we have the weekend off, so for players like Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah] This is very good.
“But the situation is as we accept it and we train on Saturday and then concentrate on Wednesday.”
Newcastle -Baas Eddie Howe admitted that the loss of Alexander Isak was huge, but he is convinced that the striker will be fit for the Carabao Cup final on March 16 when they meet Liverpool again.
He said: “It goes without saying how important he is and I think you could see that. It was a late decision, around noon, he did not feel well in his groin. With large games that arise, we didn't want to take any risks. “
