Virgil van Dijk says that the fans of Liverpool can “sing what they want” – but nobody in the dressing room of Reds thinks they won the title.
The Anfield -seized “we are going to win the competition” when the news from Arsenal's aimless draw came on Wednesday and fully benefited Liverpool to defeat Newcastle and increase their lead to 13 points. No side in the English top history has ever lost the title after he was so far ahead in this phase of a season, but Van Dijk insists that he and his teammates will not start celebrating.
“They can sing what they want,” said Liverpool's captain. “We have to deal with that.
“It was a good atmosphere, as always, and we have to make sure that the rest of the games here will also be a great atmosphere and we have to continue.
“I knew the moment that was about the arsenal result, we just concentrate on our game. I have often said. It doesn't matter what Arsenal does, but I clearly understand that the fans will respond to it. “
Van Dijk says that none of the players will celebrate until the title is mathematically safe and their focus is on their next match against Paris St Germain in the Champions League. “There is no 'almost there',” said the Dutch star.
“There are still 10 games to go for us and nothing is decided yet. Until it is decided, we will not be taken away at all.
“In that sense, I am becoming the boring man because I will say 'on the next game, stay calm'. It was an intense 15 days, with many intense games, and I think we got out pretty well, but it doesn't mean nothing has been done.
“I remain players, and also the outside world, that there is no time and space for complacency.
“The message today was that we had to show what we are all about, because after a very good victory against Man City and then dropping points or having a bad performance, that would mean that the performance against City meant nothing.
“I think we have shown a very good reaction, a great game attacking, defensive and another clean slate. I think we have the most clean sheets this season and that all comes from the hard work of the team. We have to keep that going and see what it entails. “
