Captain Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United has been encouraged to leave Old Trafford because he deserves to play for a better club.
Fernandes, 30, still has to win a competition title during his playing career. He picked up domestic cups with United and with previous club sporting CP and played for Portugal in their 2019 UEFA Nations League Final Victory, but closest to a competition title was then United ended a distant second in 2020-21.
The skipper has arrived for criticism of his versions this season, with United Songishing in the lower half of the Premier League table. Roy Keane was the newest former star that tore the Portuguese international, and called Fernandes and his teammates “trailers”.
Keane's colleague expert Ian Wright came to the defense of Fernandes. And now Joe Cole, a former teammate of Wright in West Ham, has done the same.
“He is not a perfect football player such as Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes or Kevin De Bruyne, but he is a brilliant football player who has been absolutely fantastic for Manchester United during the most difficult period the club had in 40 years.
“He can keep up more than his head with what he has achieved in Manchester, but I think he deserves to play in a better team. It will be a nice separation point for the club and it will benefit both. United needs players who will do things that do not suit Bruno. They have to build a strong base around the club, and they might have to cash it in and introduce players who have different attributes. “
Cole's comments come after Keane had not pulled a punch when it came to Fernandes. Speaking on the stick to the football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, the Irishman demanded more from United's number eight.
“Talent is not enough!” Keane said in conversation with Wright before referring to the former Arsenal teammate Tony Adams of the striker. “You keep going back to Talent – Bruno is a talented player, but it's not enough.
'With whom were you in the dressing room? Tony Adams. [You say] “Tony Adams was this, Tony Adams was that,” because he was a hunter. You have young players who have to look at someone and go 'I like what he is doing'. They can't put the ball in the top of the net from 25 meters, I understand that, but you want someone who goes guys, are you with me? Are you with me? “”
United Manager Ruben Amorim has defended Fernandes in the light of Keane's criticism. “I heard about that – I have a different opinion,” Amorim said reporters prior to the United'a FA Cup meeting with Fulham on Sunday.
“Bruno is really important for us in the club, especially for me. He plays well in a difficult context and he always wants responsibility.
“I know that as a captain sometimes does things, sometimes with his arms, criticizes his teammates, but above all it is a bit of frustration. He wants to win and sometimes it is difficult to deal with that frustration. Roy Keane has great standards of his time. But I think my opinion is more important than Roy Keane's because I am the coach. “
