Barcelona chose a movement for a midfielder last summer, despite many who point to the position as the most obvious gap in their team. Nevertheless, instead, the new manager Hansi Flick decided to rely Academy products on Academy products Marc Casado, Marc Bernal and Frenkie de Jong. With the future of the Dutchman, however, the Blaugrana is still linked to economic alternatives to the Dutchman.
One was Arsenal -midfielder Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian international is from contract at the end of the season and available on a free transfer this summer. Pedey would add a physical steel that currently does not exist in the midfield of Barcelona, as well as more experience.
According to Charles Watts, Arsenal has now opened conversations with Pedey about a new deal, hoping for an extension. The 31-year-old has also received inquiries from Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus with regard to a movement this summer, and it seems that there will be a struggle for his future. However, the Blaugrana will not be part of that struggle, report sports.
Instead, priority gives the development of Casado and Bernal, which will recover from a cruciate ligament injury at the start of the next campaign. Moreover, the future of De Jong looks like it could still be in Catalonia. Although it is an excellent candidate for a sale, and contract discussions that have been set for a summer solution, the Dutchman would like to stay in Barcelona. That will be combined with the insistence of Flick in its quality and value for the team, could be sufficient for a renewal that would keep him in the club.
Until those conversations take place, the future of De Jong remains uncertain, but for the time being, Barcelona has at least decided to have a relocation for Pedey. If De Jong and Barcelona can't agree with a deal, they have been clear that they will sell the 27-year-old, but it seems that his continuity is still on the table.
