Former Liverpool -star Mark Lawrenson has warned the club that he expects Alisson to continue at the end of the season.
Alisson was the savior of the Reds against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening, making Save after Save to prevent Luis Enrique's side from scoring. It became even better in front of Arne Slot in the final phase when Harvey Elliott Laag shot in the PSG network to give the Premier League leaders a 1-0 lead to defend in the second stage in Anfield.
Liverpool has already agreed a deal to bring Giorgi Mamardashvili to Merseyside next summer. Caoimhin Kelleher is also still in the club's books and this season has played a considerable amount of football during the injuries of Alisson for the turn of the year, although he is also linked to an exit.
Alisson's contract runs until 2027, but there has been speculation about moving to Germany or Saudi Arabia. While some have tipped Kelleher to continue after the arrival of Mhaldashvili, Lawrenson sees things differently.
“I feel that the reason that Liverpool has brought Giorgi Mhamardashvili is because Alisson will leave in the summer,” said 67-year-old Paddy Power. “I feel that he wants to leave, which Caoimhin Kelleher and Mamardashvili will have to fight for the number one place.
“Alisson is now 32 years old, so I think he is looking for a last big payment day before he retires. Every team in the world wants Alisson, so if Liverpool can get a lot of money for him, it works for all parties. “
In 2024 Alisson admitted that he was “a little attracted” after seeing the financial figures mentioned in connection with the Saudi Pro League, but expressed the desire to honor his Liverpool contract. “At the end of the day you play football for love. It is the thing you like to do, but it is our profession and we want to use the years that we have to make the best of it,” he said.
“I think I am personally open to that – but not now. This is not the moment. I am really focused on the things we have here in Liverpool and although I still have my contract here, I will be focused here.”
The PSG match was not the first to contain a great Alisson performance, but the keeper suggested that it was his best for the club. Manager Arne Slot glowed in his analysis of the Brazilian when he spoke with TNT Sports in the aftermath of the game.
“I have had some very good players so far, but so far never the best keeper in the world,” said Slot. “He showed that he is the best in the world today. To go with a victory was probably a bit more than we deserved.”
Match winner Elliot repeated those feelings. “No words. This man is incredible. The best in the world,” said the midfielder.
“Every game he shows it, he keeps us in so many games. Tonight I had the opportunity to pay back this man. I don't know where we would be without him. Hopefully he can stop going inside and we can continue to end the chances. A good team performance.”
