Man United remained a chance it was missed after the 1-1 draw on Thursday at Real Sociedad in their Europa League Last-16 First-Been-Meeting.
The side of Ruben Amorim took a 57-minute lead in San Sebastian through the first goal of Joshua Zirkzee in Europe, but was fed back by a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty, awarded after a review by the video assistant referee for a handball by Bruno Fernandes.
That criminal decision was symptomatic for a night of frustration for Man United in which they missed a number of possibilities to take control of the draw, perhaps no more than when Diogo Dalot was in space on the right.
With the chance of crossing, Rasmus Hojlund approached the penalty area with speed and had lost his marker. He called for a cross, but Dalot decided to cut in instead when a simple ball would have probably resulted in a tap over the goal.
De Dane did not score three months and the incident was reminiscent of last season when Hojlund complained to the then manager Erik ten Hag that his teammates did not pass him.
Hojlund continued to rumble at Dalot and man United Legend Paul Scholes was just as angry with the Portuguese.
“It has been comfortable for United, an easy half of football,” the former midfielder TNT Sports said during the break.
“They should be paramount, Dalot should have squared it to Hojlund. They have dangerous players, but have not been a threat.
'The frustrating thing is that we have seen them practice that. For Dalot not to see that it is criminal. He has made a good run, you are immediately back, for every back in world football to not see that there is a criminal. '
The forward options of Man United Boss Ruben Amorim are limited in Europe due to the fact that Starlet Chido Obi is not eligible.
The 17-year-old was impressed during the FA Cup exit from the club to Fulham on Sunday, but was not registered for the Europa League last month.
Hojlund is therefore almost guaranteed in the competition and Amorim seemed to be entering a diplomatic line when he was asked about the incident with Dalot in his press conference after the game.
“One thing that I am sure is (over) is that they really want to score goals and win games,” Amorim said.
'So they do the very best and sometimes they want the best way in that position, but they don't decide the best way in their position.
“But it was a clear situation. Rasmus did really well, Dalot was doing really well, the decision was not the best.
'The most important thing is to continue and not stay like then fight. Let's continue with the following occasion. '
And that next occasion will come on Sunday when they organize Arsenal in the Premier League before the reverse fixture of Tuesday with Real Sociedad.
