Man City 3-3 Feyenoord: Conceding 3 goals in 15 mins, Pep’s nightmare continues

The losing streak may have stopped, but the questions remain for Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City players.

Macth Report

From 3-0 down, City managed to throw away the win with self-inflicted mistakes. Three goals conceded in fourteen minutes underlined the scale of the ongoing crisis Guardiola faces. Catastrophic defending allowed Feyenoord to find a way back in a match that should have been beyond their reach, but Guardiola's side proved to serve their opponents with their late collapse.

City travel to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, where a repeat of such mistakes will be ruthlessly punished by Arne Slot's formidable side. A mistake by Josko Gvardiol fifteen minutes before the end and a sloppy back pass that allowed Feyenoord to score showed City's tendency to harm themselves.

More defensive chaos seven minutes later allowed Feyenoord to pull another goal back and left City fans fearing another home implosion after Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Spurs. Those fears were justified: the Dutch team grabbed the equalizer a minute after normal time, after more slapstick defending from City saw them punished again.

Feyenoord always looked threatening, even when they fell behind and the match seemed out of their reach. Brian Priske's side deserved plenty of credit for refusing to accept defeat. They had to wait until midway through the first half before they saw the City goal, Igor Paixao sending a spectacular volley from high to wide under pressure from Foden.

A minute later, at the other end, Wellenreuther came to his side's rescue with another stunning save, diving full force to his left to deflect a low goal ball from Foden. Guardiola could not contain his despair at another goal. -miss.

After a good start to the match, City's passing began to go awry, with Ederson, Silva, Akanji and Matheus Nunes all guilty of conceding possession cheaply, much to Guardiola's increasing dismay.

Paixao had another chance to score just after the half hour, but his half-hearted attempt with a lob was easily neutralized by Ederson. A thunderous shot from Hwang was deflected from behind to Nunes as City continued to live dangerously and apply pressure.

When Haaland was put through on goal by Foden it seemed inevitable that he would score, but the attacker's shot was blocked by David Hancko. But Haaland was not to be denied a third time. He converted from the penalty spot in the 44th minute after being adjudged to have made a mistake to win a fortuitous penalty.

City doubled their lead five minutes after the restart when a volley from the edge of the penalty area by Ilkay Gundogan deflected off Hancko, leaving Wellenreuther with no chance to save. Haaland made it 3-0 two minutes later. He slid and turned the ball into the net after a cross from Nunes, who ran down the right thanks to a sublime pass from Gundogan.

Gvardiol's mistake allowed Anis Hadji Moussa to pull a goal back, before nerves were further frayed when substitute Santiago Gimenez curled the ball home from close range after more slapstick defending from City. Feyenoord completed the miraculous comeback in the 89th minute when Paixao got to the ball ahead of Ederson and headed the ball into the empty net ahead of Hancko.

There was no sign of anger from Guardioa, who simply scratched his head in apparent disbelief at how his side had imploded at home for the second time in four days.
