Liverpool is one step closer to completing what has long felt an inevitable Premier League title win after the side of Arne Slot came from behind to win 3-1 at home to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds, champions during the COVID season of 2019-2020, are now 16 points free from the second placed Arsenal, which will be taken away on Sunday opposite Manchester United.
And the men of Slot could even be champions in two more matches, the results must go their way elsewhere -although the EFL -Cup final of next weekend against Newcastle United at Wembley and the international break means that they will not be in the competition again until April.
Because things stand, 78 points can be sufficient for Liverpool to be crowned champions and if Arsenal would lose all their next four games, the lock can schedule the title against Fulham in the first weekend of next month.
If Liverpool's lead is reduced tomorrow to 13 points and stay like that, they would be confirmed as champions in the last weekend of April, when they organize Tottenham Hotspur, since there are only four rounds of Premier League matches left.
Liverpool already has the record for the least number of matches needed to win the Premier League title. They were crowned champions after their 31st game in the 2019/20 season.
But the pandemic that delayed the campaign meant that they could not beat the record of Manchester United in terms of dates, which will be on April 14 of the 2000-01 season.
Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah both spoke about their despair to win the title, because it will enable them to celebrate with the fans of the club who were denied the chance in 2020.
“The biggest motivation is to win the Premier League, not even the Champions League because I always choose the Champions League,” Salah said.
“I always say Champions League for seven years, this is the first year that I say the Premier League. I just want to win the Premier League with the city and the fans, and experience that day and go on a parade in the city will be incredible.
“It will be unforgettable because I know how much it means to win the Premier League.”
