Florian Wirtz will miss the return of Bayer Leverkusen against Bayern Munich in the Champions League after he has put offside for a few weeks with a ligament injury.
The team of Xabi Alonso was beaten 2-0 by Werder Bremen on Saturday, because they failed to take advantage of Bayern who lost 3-2 to Bochum and left behind the Bundesliga leaders.
Wirtz came up as a half-time replacement when Alonso shuffled his pack for that match, and soon afterwards with an ankle problem.
The Bundesliga champions, who are confronted with a 3-0 deficit on the first leg in their all-German Champions League-equal game, will now be for an unknown period without Wirtz.
“Bayer 04 will have to manage it without Florian Wirtz,” the club said in a statement on Monday.
“The Germany International sustained a ligament injury in his judge only in the home game against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
“The 21-year-old midfielder will be out of operation for a few weeks.”

Wirtz, who scored nine goals and set up another 10 in the Bundesliga this season, also scored six times in the Champions League.
He will also miss the German Nations League Quartefinale-equal game against Italy, with the teams that will fight against two legs on March 20 and March 23.
Wirtz will also not return on April 1, when DFB-Pokal-Holders Leverkusen are confronted with Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-final of that competition.
“The loss of Florian is clear to us in this phase of the season, but we will compensate for him with a strong team,” says Simon Rolfes, sports director of Bayer.
“We know Florian and also know that he will come back as soon as possible. We assume that he will be completely fit again for the run-in.”
