Real Madrid’s sensational record against Champions League opponents Liverpool
Carlo Ancelotti travels to Anfield with a depleted squad, but recent encounters against the Reds will provide hope for the LaLiga giants.
Real Madrid travel to Anfield on Wednesday to take on Liverpool in the Champions League with a depleted squad, with Vinicius Jr. the latest in a long line of first-team stars to be struck by injury.
The Brazilian winger scored five goals in five UCL appearances against the Reds, including two in a 5-2 win for Los Blancos on their last visit to Merseyside in February 2023.
And that has been a common story in the meetings between the teams in recent years and that should offer hope to the Spaniards despite their fitness problems.
Real Madrid vs Liverpool: all previous matches
Real Madrid and Liverpool have already faced off 11 times, with the Premier League club gaining the upper hand early on in the rivalry, which has now gone completely the other way.
The Reds won the first three meetings between the clubs, namely the 1981 European Cup final, followed by both legs of the round of 16 tie in 2008/09. However, Liverpool have not beaten Wednesday's opponents since a 4-0 win at Anfield on March 10, 2009.
Since then, Madrid have won seven of the eight meetings, including the Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022. Of the others, they won two group stage matches in 2014/15, the first leg of the quarter-final in 2020/21 and both legs of the tie in the eighth finals of last season.
The only time Real Madrid have not beaten Liverpool in their last eight meetings was in April 2021, when they drew 0-0 in the second leg of the aforementioned quarter-final in England.
