2025 Spanish Super Cup: when, where and who is playing?
The two cup finalists and the top two teams in LaLiga EA Sports will battle to be crowned Spanish super champions.
The Spanish Super Cup is one of those tournaments that at first glance seems less important than others, but when the time comes, everyone wants to win it. What was once a single match between the national champions and the winner of the Copa del Rey is now a competition featuring the top four teams from the previous season's domestic tournaments.
With the format change, the two Copa del Rey finalists and the top two finishers in LaLiga will earn a place in next year's Spanish Super Cup. This time the participants are Mallorca, Athletic Club, Real Madrid and Barcelona. If a team qualifies through both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, the next team in the standings will take its place, potentially making the Super Cup a match between the top four players in the competition.
Spanish Super Cup: four participants
Real Madrid, who qualify as 2023/24 LaLiga EA Sports champions, and Barcelona, runners in the competition, are the only teams to have participated in every edition since the format changed in 2020.
From the Copa del Rey onwards, Mallorca secured a place as surprise finalists, marking their first Super Cup appearance since 2004. Athletic Club will also take part after winning the 2023/24 Copa del Rey in a dramatic final against Mallorca, decided in a penalty shootout.

The Spanish Super Cup kicks off on Wednesday, January 8, with the first semi-final. The second semi-final will take place on Thursday, January 9, and the grand final is scheduled for Sunday, January 12, 2025. Notably, there will be no third-place match in this tournament; only the semi-finals and the final will be played.
Where is the Spanish Super Cup played?
The choice of venue is one of the most controversial decisions in Spanish football in recent years. The RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) has decided that the Spanish Super Cup will be played in Saudi Arabia until at least 2029.
The 2025 edition is no exception; the competition will take place in Jeddah at the King Abdullah Sport City KASC Stadium, known as 'Al Jawhara', with a capacity of just over 60,000 spectators.
