Football fans remained furious after Julian Alvarez saw his penalty goal excluded after a variety intervention.
Conor Gallagher's early goal for Atletico Madrid had forced extra time and penalties with holders Real Madrid during the second stage of the Madrid Derby Champions League Last 16 Clash during the second stage.
Both parties were unable to find a decisive winner, with Vinicius JR left a spot kick over the bar in the second half, so a shootout was needed to separate the teams at the end of more than 210 minutes of action.
With the road that first kicked, the first three penalties were all scored.
Ex-Manchester City star Alvarez then stepped up for his side second penalty in the Wanda Metropolitano.
Catastrophe struck when the Argentin slipped during his run -up, but his effort still managed to find his way in the net.
VAR, however, seemed to see something wrong with the stairs.
And after a review, Alvarez saw his goal excluded for an extraordinary double touch.
Atletico scored their next penalty via Angel Correa, but was sent out of the competition again by their neighbors when Marcos Llorente saw his kick saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Fans continued to smoke about the inexplicable intervention by VAR and accused the preference of the 15-way European champions.
A fan on social media said: “Football will never see such a thing again. A historical robbery has taken place in the Metropolitano with the whole world. Payments have come in link.”
A second said: “Canceling a penalty because there may have been a double touch is disgusting. At least, Álvarez must have the chance to take it again.
“But if there is not even clear evidence of a double touch, why not good? There is no other way to say: it is anti-football.”
A third added: “The Julian Alvarez -Penaltychop is all the proof that we needed to prove that Real Madrid has a pact with the devil in the Champions League.”
Atleti boss Diego Simeone was eligible as always when discussing the intervention and asked reporters to put their hand up when they saw the apparent double touch.
He then shouted: “Did anyone here see Julán touch the ball twice? Go on your hand! Come on, come on! Lift your hand! Nobody raised theirs! Next question …”
However, the delayed repetitions of the incident showed that there was indeed a light double touch.
Football laws, IFAB, clearly write in the laws of the game that the double touch of a penalty shovel is forbidden.
Law 14.2 states: “The kicker touches the ball again before he has touched another player; an indirect free kick (or direct free kick for a handball attack) is awarded.”
Law 10, which clarifies the rules on shootouts, also adds: “If the kicker is punished for an attack committed after the referee has indicated that the kick is being taken, that kick is admitted as a missed and the kicker is warned.”
She sees Arsenal playing the progression from Real Madrid to the quarterfinals, who were eliminated by Bayern Munich last season.
The first stage starts on April 8 at the Emirates, with the second stage that starts the following week on April 16.
These two clubs were remarkably only once in the Champions League in 2005/06.
Arsenal emerged as 1-0 winners in a two-legged semi-final thanks to Thierry Henry Goal early in the second half in the Bernabeu.
That season was the last time that the Gunners reached the final of the competition.
The winner of the draw plays one of Paris Saint-Germain or Aston Villa for a place in the final in the Allianz Arena.
