Jordan Henderson's unexpected return to the England team has fueled a fierce debate among fans, with many who are interrogating the decision of the new manager Thomas Tuchel to bring back the experienced midfielder.
The 34-year-old, who last played for England in 2023, was omitted from the Euro 2024 team of Gareth Southgate and seemed to have fallen from the photo of the national team.
Tuchel's first selection of selection – released on Friday morning – Henderson has called, in addition to other surprise inclusions such as Marcus Rashford and Arsenal -young Myles Lewis -S -SKILY.
The recall of Henderson is perhaps the most debated decision of the announcement of Tuchel's team. Once a pillar in the midfield of England, his international career seemed to be over after a tumultuous year.
Henderson had left Liverpool for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and faced a considerable recoil. His time in the Saudi Pro League lasted only six months before he made a January transfer to Ajax, hoping to breathe new life into his career in Europe.
Since he joined the Eredivisie side, Henderson has played regularly, but his versions have not been noticed. That is why many English fans were surprised by his return.
Social media broke out after the announcement, in which fans express their confusion and frustration about the recording of Henderson – especially with younger midfielders such as Adam Wharton, James Garner and Kobbie Mainoo stand up as potential options.
A Twitter user summarized the general sentiment: 'Henderson who is recalled must be one of the strangest selections in England in years. What did he actually do at Ajax to justify this?! '
Another fan wondered if the recall was based on merit: 'We have to move forward with new ideas, but is Henderson back? It feels like we're stuck in 2021. “
Some pointed to the contradiction in excluding Trent Alexander-Arnold as he remembered Henderson. A fan wrote: 'No trent because he is injured, honest enough. But a half-fit Trent offers more in midfield than Henderson at the moment. '
Others were more direct in their criticism and wrote: 'Henderson was not good enough for England 18 months ago. He then went to Saudi, flopped, came back and now he is suddenly good enough again? Make it logical. '
Even some supporters of Manchester United, usually indifferent to Henderson, were surprised by the decision. A fan joked: “To be honest, I prefer to see Jonjo Shelvey in the team at the moment.”
Others just wrote: 'Tuchel Out', 'Jordan Henderson about Adam Wharton? Jesus Christ, is Southgate back? “And” Jordan Henderson, fired him immediately. “
Despite the overwhelming criticism, some fans defended Tuchel's decision. One fan argued that experience still has value: 'People behave as if Henderson was completely washed. He still regularly plays at a high level. Tuchel probably wants leadership in the team. '
Another fan, pointed to the lack of depth of England in midfield: 'Beyond Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are actually quite light in midfield. Henderson gives us at least an option. '
