New documentary on Sir Ferguson’s life & career to be released on Boxing Day
A new documentary and podcast series about the life and career of Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson is in the works.
More than a decade after the legendary Scot ended his career in the dugout after winning a record-extending 13th league title, interest in what allowed him to enjoy such unprecedented success remains as high as ever.
The two-part documentary Sir Alex, produced by BBC Sport and BBC Scotland, launches on BBC iPlayer on Boxing Day.
Featuring interviews from some of the players who shaped Ferguson's 27-year reign at Old Trafford, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke and Jaap Stam, Sir Alex will provide insight into United's 1999 Champions League triumph.
Further first-hand accounts from the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick will explore how Ferguson was able to reinvent his team on the way to a second Champions League title in 2008.
The documentary will also look at Ferguson's pre-United career, including how he led Aberdeen to the unlikeliest of continental successes as they defeated Real Madrid to lift the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983.
BBC Sports Director Alex Kay-Jelski said: “There are few more pivotal people in the history of British sport than Sir Alex Ferguson. It is an honor for us to be able to tell his story.
Featuring behind-the-scenes footage, entertaining locker room anecdotes and fascinating insights from his former players, assistant managers and coaches, as well as journalists who followed his incomparable career every step of the way, this documentary digs deep into the character traits that explain how and why the son of a Scottish shipbuilder became one of the most influential figures in football.
In addition to online, the two episodes will also be broadcast on BBC Scotland on January 1 and 2, and on BBC One in early 2025.
Meanwhile, the accompanying BBC Sounds podcast will be presented by Kelly Cates and Jonathan Northcroft and will delve even further into Ferguson's stellar career.
A special bonus episode of the Sporting Giants: Sir Alex Ferguson podcast features an exclusive interview with Sir Kenny Dalglish as he discusses his sporting rivalry with his lifelong friend and compatriot.
Dalglish's Blackburn Rovers famously helped Ferguson's United to the Premier League title on the final day of the season in 1995.
Dalglish then returned to Liverpool in 2011 to manage the Reds for just over a year before being replaced by Brendan Rodgers.
