Van Dijk ‘very hungry’ for repeat EFL Cup final success

Virgil van Dijk says that last season's EFL Cup Final Triumph made him “very hungry” for a repeated success against Newcastle United 12 months later.

The Liverpool skipper was the hero in last year's showpiece in Wembley, with his header in the 118th minute that sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

It was the first honor of Van Dijk while wearing the bracelet, which had taken over at the start of that campaign from the departing Jordan Henderson.

And the Dutchman hopes to experience that “great feeling” again on Sunday, when the Runaway Premier League leaders want to complete the first part of a potential double.

“It was clear that last year was quite special, clearly the entire evening, structure, how the game went,” he said the official website of Liverpool.

“It was definitely a special that I will never forget. It makes me absolutely very hungry to hopefully do it again against a very good Newcastle side.

“These things that I will never take for granted. Removing trophies for Liverpool is a great feeling together with our fans.

“I think every night we have experienced these moments has been so special. You want more of it, and you want to experience it again and again.

“We know how difficult it is and in every competition we compete to do that. But we have a chance, a grand finale, against a very good team that can make it very difficult for you.

“It's a final, it's a day at Wembley with our fans, family and friends that we want to reach the maximum [from] – who holds the cup and goes home with the trophy to Liverpool. That is what we are going to fight for. “
