Van Dijk issues fierce warning to team-mates to avoid the ‘world sinking’

Virgil van Dijk warned that Liverpool must be “our a ** es” to stop the “world sinking”.

The last defeat of the Carabao Cup on Sunday against Newcastle ended a miserable week in which the side of Arne Slot was also dumped by Paris Saint-Germain from the Champions League.

Skipper van Dijk wants the Reds to respond with five straight victories that would probably see them secure the Prem title by beating Tottenham on 27 April.

He said: “We have to turn this around. If you lose twice in five days, it feels like the world sinks. Two weeks before, everything was sunshine and rainbows.

“We couldn't get it done in the Champions League, we lost this final and we were beaten from the FA Cup.

“We have nine games to go and I don't think a motivation is needed to try to get the job done. We have to finish our A ** es.

“But now everyone goes to their respective countries and will play them all and hopefully stay fit.

“We then have a few days to settle and be ready for Everton at home.

“If we win five games – clearly a very difficult job – we will be Champions of England.

“If you keep these things in mind, it can also benefit you to ensure that you work hard.

“I can now guarantee that there will be so many difficult moments in all those games.”

Liverpool are 12 points free from Arsenaal. The Reds need 16 points to be sure, but five victories must be sufficient because of their better target difference.

Yet inconsistent Arsenal will probably drop points in their next few games, which means that the Arne Slot team – who last won the Premier League in 2020 – could complete the title earlier.

Van Dijk, whose team encounters Everton on April 2, revealed how Slot tried to pick up his stars.

The Dutchman VVD added: “He said that everyone should be disappointed by not winning the cup – but that there is a title to win and when we come back, we have a big competition.”

The center-ridge insisted that the euro loss for PSG on penalties had nothing to do with Liverpool's silly Wembley display.

He said, “No, I don't think there was any impact of it. We all gave it, I don't think PSG had anything to do with it.”
