Moment Celtic star scores HORROR own goal in crunch UCL clash against Brugge

Celtic suffered the humiliation of a shock own goal in the first half of their Champions League clash with Club Brugge on Wednesday evening.

The Scottish giants have once again been the best team domestically, but instead of their Champions League struggles, which have become all too regular in recent years, they have impressed this season.

With two wins and a draw from four games heading into Wednesday night's match with Belgian side Club Brugge, Celtic found themselves in one of 16 play-off positions in the league stage.

However, as Brendan Rodgers' side looked to make three out of five and further strengthen their perhaps surprising credentials as qualifiers for the next round, they suffered a nightmarish setback in the early stages.

While Kasper Schmeichel wanted to play at the back, the ball was played back from midfield to Cameron Carter-Vickers in his own penalty area.

Unbeknownst to the US international defender, Schmeichel had gone outside his right post to create a better passing angle before the ball reached Carter-Vickers.

However, without looking where his keeper was, Carter-Vickers played a blind pass where he thought the Dane would be.

But it turned out to be a disaster: the ball rolled painfully into the bottom corner of Schmeichel's goal, on the opposite side of where he was standing, as he ran in vain to get back across and keep out his own goal.

In fact, Carter-Vickers seemingly knew exactly what he was walking into in an instant, but he could only look on dejectedly as the ball crept into the bottom corner to give the Belgian side the lead, which they held at half-time.

Carter-Vickers has spent just over two seasons at Celtic since signing on a permanent basis in 2022 after a season on loan from Tottenham.

In that period he made 127 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing two assists, and won three Scottish league titles, including a treble under Ange Postecoglou in 2022-23.
