Liverpool dressing room make feelings known on Carragher after Salah comments
Andy Robertson has revealed that Jamie Carragher was on the receiving end of a friendly row in the Liverpool dressing room this week following his criticism of Mohamed Salah.
The Scot shared this on Wednesday evening during a light-hearted conversation with Carragher after Liverpool's 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League. Earlier this week, Carragher, 46, hit out at Salah for appearing 'selfish' after expressing his disappointment that Liverpool had not yet formally offered him a new contract.
Salah, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, claimed he was “more out than in” after revealing there was no offer currently on the table following the Reds' 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday. It is understood the Egyptian is keen to stay at Anfield and talks are underway with his agent Ramy Abbas. However, no agreement has yet been reached.
Nevertheless, Carragher, who expressed his enthusiasm to see 32-year-old Salah extend his stay, said he was unhappy with the timing of the comments. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I have to say I am very disappointed with Salah. In the seven years he has been at the football club, he stopped in the mixed zone [to talk to reporters] twice.
“That's his right and that's absolutely fine. But he decided to quit for the third time at Southampton because he had won Liverpool in the game and put that out.
“The most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Salah. It is not the future of Virgil van Dijk and it is not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The most important thing is that Liverpool win the Premier League – that is, more important than all these players.
“If he continues to comment or his agent continues to post cryptic tweets, that is selfish. That is thinking about himself and not the football club.”
After Liverpool's win over Real Madrid, CBS asked Robertson for a post-match interview and he couldn't hide his amusement when discussing Carragher's criticism.
“He [Carragher] That's definitely become a bit of a pet peeve in the locker room,” Robertson, 30, said with a chuckle. Asked for details, he playfully turned away: “No comment, I think I'll leave that!”
Reflecting further, Robertson acknowledged that the former Liverpool centre-back had done nothing untoward.
“I think he [Carragher] is paid to do his job and I think you all do,” he said. “It's part of football, he has to give his opinion and whether we agree with it or not, sometimes it's a different story .”
