Mohamed Salah could eclipse Cristiano Ronaldo with mega-money transfer to Saudi Arabia
Mohamed Salah is a 'dream' signing for Saudi Pro League clubs next summer and his transfer fee could eclipse that of Cristiano Ronaldo if he joins, according to reports.
Salah's future at Liverpool is far from certain after he claimed he was “more out than in” at Anfield as his contract expires next summer and no offer is yet on the table.
Reds boss Arne Slot dismissed speculation over Salah's future this week as he made light of the player's comments and said no one in his squad was distracted despite three players joining as free agents next summer went the next summer.
The 32-year-old was already being pursued by the Saudi club after Liverpool rejected a £150million bid from Al-Ittihad last summer. According to the Daily Mail, an approach is expected at the end of the season.
Saudi leaders reportedly believe a move for Salah “makes financial sense” and are willing to make him one of their highest-paid stars, with the player, as things stand, available on a free transfer .
Ronaldo currently holds the record for the largest salary in the Saudi Pro League after securing a deal worth around £177 million per season and Pro League officials are willing to pay Salah a figure that would put him on par with Real Madrid legend – or possibly even obscure it. They also believe that Salah's influence and 'marketing power' in the Arab world could lead to 'lucrative' results.
Salah turns 33 next summer and Liverpool could opt to allow him to join a Saudi club rather than pay out a huge salary amid financial fair play restrictions. Salah is a legend at Liverpool and their fifth highest scorer of all time, having scored 223 times in 368 games, and was instrumental in their Champions League victory in 2019 and their Premier League title the following year.
But his words about his future at Liverpool appeared damning this week as he cast doubt on the prospect of him extending his eight-year spell at Anfield. “Well, we're almost in December and I haven't received any offers to stay at the club yet,” he said. 'I'm probably outside more than inside.
“You know I have been at the club for years. There is no club like it. But ultimately it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I have not yet received anything about my future.” I love the fans. The fans love me. Ultimately it is not in my hands, nor in the hands of the fans.'
Salah has continued to show his influence and consistency at the top level for the team this season, scoring 12 goals in 19 appearances as he looks to help Liverpool become Premier League champions again. The Reds currently sit at the top of the table with eight points.
His manager Arne Slot insisted he had no immediate concerns about Salah despite his comments. The Dutchman said: “I don't think it distracts Mo at all, maybe it even brings out the best in him when you look at his performances so far. I talk to Mo about what I expect from him, as I do with everyone. ” the other players, and he's in a good place right now.”
