Ruben Amorim delivers touching message to ‘special’ Man United supporters after securing his first victory as manager
Ruben Amorim toasted a 'special' night at Old Trafford, where he felt he was officially included as one of Manchester United's players after securing his first win since taking charge.
Rasmus Hojlund's brace either side of half-time ensured United recorded a crucial come-from-behind 3-2 victory against a stubborn Bodo/Glimt team in the Europa League.
Amorim cut an anxious figure on the sidelines throughout the match, but walked out proudly at the final whistle after securing his first win.
“It was special,” he said.
'Half the stadium doesn't know me! I'm from Portugal and half the stadium doesn't know me.
'I haven't done anything for this club yet, but the way they supported me in the beginning made me feel that I'm not alone here, I'm one of them now. It was very special and I hope I don't disappoint my supporters.'
Just like on Sunday in Ipswich, Man United took an early lead, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring after just 50 seconds.
But Amorim's team failed to build on that and he knows that while this win was crucial in their faltering Europa League campaign, there is much more to come from his team.
“Like a real ride,” he said of the back-and-forth encounter.
'We started well, but then conceded two goals in two transitions. I like the way the players tried to play our game.
“Sometimes we won the ball and we have had problems in the past with giving the ball away too much. The mentality is to keep the ball.
“They really tried their best and I think we deserved the win.”
Hojlund's brace, his second appearance for the Stretford End, was a huge shot in the arm for a player who has looked lost in front of goal too often this season.
Amorim is level-headed despite his man-of-the-match performance as a striker and is confident he can continue and play even better.
'I think he has improved the connection [with team-mates]Amorim said.
'But he still has to improve, because sometimes he has too many ball contacts.
'He was aggressive in the penalty area and he is a quality player. I think he scores the most difficult goals and he still has a lot to improve, just like many players.”
Hojlund's goals last night took him to eight major European goals for United. The only players to score more for the club at the age of 21 or younger are Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney (nine each).
“He told me not to think too much about the guys behind me and just work on what I saw in front of me. We already saw that with the first goal,” said Hojlund.
'Of course it will take time [to adapt to his demands] and we can already see some patterns.
'Now it is time for us to build. For me, this system reminds me of how I played in a 3-4-3 at Atalanta. I like it very much.'
When asked if this was a building block they can build on before facing Everton on Sunday, Hojlund kept it short and sweet.
“We want to make sure these games don't get too exciting,” he said. 'But it's all about the three points, isn't it?'
