Rasmus Hojlund reveals what Amorim told him at half-time

Rasmus Hojlund has revealed what Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim told him during half-time of his side's 3-2 Europa League win over Bod/Glimt on Thursday evening.

Amorim had a perfect home career with United at Old Trafford, but his side had to come from behind to beat their Norwegian opponents and continue to rise in the Europa League.

It was Hojlund who also had Amorim to thank for the comeback, with United's number 9 scoring twice either side of half-time to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win.

Hojlund was left out of Amorim's starting line-up in the Premier League this weekend as the Red Devils scored a 1-1 draw against strugglers Ipswich, with Marcus Rashford preferred in the number 9 role in Amorim's first match.

But he grabbed the opportunity with both hands on Thursday and may now have his hand raised to start this weekend when the league restarts with United taking on Everton.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Hojlund gave insight into Amorim's half-time team discussion, who gave him some advice before going on to score his second goal of the match.

“I always try to stay within the box,” said the striker. “Quick corner and we've been working on things like this.

'The manager told me at half-time to stick to the near post and we saw how that worked out.' Hojlund's winners came after he made a near-post run to get on the end of a Manuel Ugarte cross.

The forward has had a stop-start in his United career so far, scoring a total of 18 goals in 56 appearances since joining the club for £72 million in the summer of 2023.

It was unclear whether he would be first choice under Amorim following the departure of Erik ten Hag as manager and that remains the case, but he did himself no harm on Thursday evening.

There is room for one striker in Amorim's 3-4-3 system, with two other attacking players in support. That was Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho on Sunday, and Garnacho and Mason Mount on Thursday.

That puts Hojlund in direct competition with the likes of Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee and possibly some wide players for a starting spot, and the Dane spoke about getting used to the new system after the match.

“It will take time, but today we already saw patterns and it is getting better,” they said. 'It is now up to us to build on that.

'For me this system is reminiscent of how I played with 3-4-3 at Atalanta and I like it very much.'
