Veteran defender to leave Atletico Madrid next summer
Atletico Madrid were in desperate need of central defensive additions over the summer and managed to secure the services of Robin Le Normand and Clement Lenglet. Nevertheless, this problem will undoubtedly need to be addressed again in 2025.
Lenglet is only on loan from Barcelona, so a replacement for him will have to be found (or he will be signed permanently). Furthermore, a successor to Axel Witsel will also be needed, as Relevo has reported that the 35-year-old will almost certainly leave Los Colchoneros at the end of the season.
Witsel's contract expires next June and there are no plans for him to be offered a new contract. He has been an important figure for Diego Simeone over the past three seasons, but given his age there is a desire for fresh blood.
Witsel (and possibly Lenglet) is unlikely to be the only centre-back to leave Atletico Madrid next summer, with fellow veteran Cesar Azpilicueta also expected to move. It means that club bosses will have to significantly address the situation again, which is not ideal.
