Onana has been dubbed ‘one of the WORST goalkeepers’ in MU history, but is he?

The quarterfinals draw from Manchester United with Lyon has already come across a tasty fight before a ball was even kicked after a few fiery words between two of the opposition.

The use of this two-legged affair was raised after a few choice words between United goalkeeper Andre Onana and Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The two players were engaged a bit verbally on Wednesday after Onana claimed that United is better than 'their opponents who annoyed Matic.

In a brutal comeback, the 36-year-old replied: 'To say that, you must have coverage to say something like that. Onana, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you have to give an answer.

'If you are one of the worst keepers in the history of Man United, you must make sure what you are talking about.

'If David de Gea, or Peter Schmeichel, or (Edwin) van der Sar said that, I will ask myself.

“But if you are one of the statistically worst keepers in the modern history of Man United, he must show that (they better) before he says.”

To social media, Onana clarified his first comments before he mocked Matic's trophy stint at Old Trafford.

He wrote: 'I would never be disrespectful for another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud.

'At least I have lifted trophies with the largest club in the world. Some cannot say the same. '

The exchange has attracted many eyes to the first stage on Thursday, but is there a truth in the words of Matic?

Remove Schmmeichel, Van der Sar or De Gea from the modern goalkeeper history of Manchester United leaves you an interesting pool of shot stoppers who were definitively the no. 1 of the club to choose from.

Mail Sport has decided to release Fabian Barthez from this, because, although he had his moments, he won two Premier League titles in the club.

Dean Henderson is also excluded because he was never really not 1 during his struggle with the Gea.

So that leaves Massimo Taibi, Mark Bosnich, Roy Carroll, Tim Howard, Ben Foster, Anders Lindegaard and Onana as the potential candidates for this unwanted tag.

For fame alone, the name of Taibi is the one who emerges in many spirits.

Taibi's catastrophic error in a 3-3 draw with Southampton on 25 September 1999 is still talking about now about 25 and half a year later after he let his legs go through the tame corn-cutter of Matt Le Tissier.

He only played in another match for United that was a 5-0 defeat in Chelsea on October 3, 1999.

The Italian only played four games and failed to retain a clean slate in one of them, with 11 goals in the process. However, it must be led to his debut a man-of-the-match display in a 3-2 victory at Bitter Rivals Liverpool.

The final no. 1 that season was Bosnich. The Australian joined the Red Devils again in the summer of 1999 and came in as the replacement of Schmeichel.

He helped the club to win the Premier League title with 18 points in 1999-00, but that is almost for him. Sir Alex Ferguson Barthez bought that subsequent summer.

Bosnich did not play a single minute in 2000-01 and in Ferguson's autobiography he called him a 'terrible professional'.

Post-Barthez In 2003, Howard and Carroll both saw a crack in the position with both high-profile errors.

Howard's moment came in that Champions League collision with Porto in 2004 when he spilled the stop-time free kick of Benni McCarthy to let Costinha pounce and she dumped that notorious Jose Mourinho celebration in the competition.

The American then lost confidence and Carroll was entrusted with the No. 1 position. The spell of the Noord -Ier, however, is the most reminded for that 'goal' against Tottenham in 2005, when he spilled the speculative shot of Pedro Mendes from the Half Line.

Ben Foster came in at a time that Van der Sar was in the club, but the Englishman was seen as his long -term successor.

He had the opportunity to set up his claim if no. 1 at the start of the 2009-10 season, with Van der Sar injured, but as others enjoyed there were some remarkable mistakes.

Despite victories against Arsenal and Manchester City in the top flight, he received criticism of his individual versions.

Back-up goalkeeper Thomas Kuszczak would later overtake Foster in the absence of Van der Sar and Foster came to Birmingham City at the end of that season.

After Van der Sar came De Gea, but at one point his future looked into the club with Ferguson who was not sure between him and other Lindegaard.

While the GEA initially struggled with the physicality of the Premier League, the Dane got his chance, but he never really understood his chance.

And that is where we are now coming to Onana. The talent of the Cameroonian alone makes him the best of the aforementioned keepers, but recently bias will make his critics come forward and it is difficult not to disagree with it.

Statistically, his clean leaf percentage is the second lowest of the seven keepers with 26 percent. Only Taibi (zero percent – but only from four games) is lower. In 69 games for United, Onana has only saved 18 clean sheets and confronted 331 Schoten with a 70.1 percent rescue ratio (236 Saves).

In his defense, however, excuses the word play, he has a weaker defense for him. The other names mentioned had the will of Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for them.

Onana did not have that luxury and since he came to the club, he has never played behind a fixed backline. Sometimes an improvised Casemiro and veteran Jonny Evans were for him last season.

However, there is also the eye test and there has been a catalog of blunders. His mistakes eventually cost united, because they were dumped from the Champions League group phases last season – and there were other examples that term.

This campaign has also been remarkable mistakes against Viktoria Plzen, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town. It should also be noted that Onana has sometimes made crucial saves this season and his ball game fits in modern times.

However, his sample season is larger than his modern United predecessors and many supporters would like to see the signature of £ 47 million is being replaced this summer.

He can keep his critics and Matic by having a determined display in Lyon on Thursday evening.
