Athletic Club was left frustrated on Thursday when they were held on a scoreless draw by Rangers in their Europa League match in Ibrox Stadium. The two teams meet in the quarterfinals of the competition and after the first stage it turned out evenly.
Athletic benefited from early in the game, but they could not take advantage. This was very frustrating for head coach Ernesto Valverde, as he told the media after the game (via Diario AS).
“We played a large part of the game against ten, with our chances of scoring and we don't even score the penalty.
“The draw had to be completed at San Mames. With the equality that exists, nobody solves it in one game. It is their credit to defend with ten players, we missed that Succepunt, it is difficult for us to open the can when the opponents close a lot. We would have liked to win and score the penalty, but there is a week left.”
Athletic will feel like winning in their home grass, and if they do, they would secure the progress to the semi -final of the Europa League. However, there is no doubt that they would very much like to take advantage of San Mames, but in the end it was not – despite the favorable circumstances.
