Fans stunned as Guardiola sings at Barcelona’s 125th gala with scar of the face
Barcelona stars past and present came together on Friday evening to celebrate the club's 125th anniversary, but it was former player and manager Pep Guardiola's performance that had everyone talking.
A pre-recorded video of the Manchester City boss was beamed to the Gran Teatre del Liceu, with the presence of the scar on his nose, which he showed ahead of his side's 3-3 draw against Feyenoord, giving some clues about when this would happen. was filmed.
But instead of saying a few words about the club where he won the European Cup as a player and manager, among other things, the Spaniard was seen taking part in the song 'Aniversari' by Catalan band Manel.
The surreal performance lasted just over a minute and was received with thunderous applause by everyone in the main hall.
There was a less enthusiastic reaction from those on social media to the bizarre moment, with one joking that the 53-year-old had been forced to do it against his will.
In reality, the song has a special meaning for Guardiola as it is said to be one of his personal favorites. Known for its monotone melody and the singer's solemn expression, the cover was certainly a unique touch.
Due to City's urgent commitments, Guardiola was unable to attend the ceremony in person, unlike the likes of Frank Rijkaard, Hristo Stoichkov, Xavi Hernandez and Patrick Kluivert.
Barcelona's current players, who currently top LaLiga, were all dressed appropriately for the occasion, with club president Joan Laporte taking the place of honour. There were additional video clips of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez and Romario.
The club also unveiled a new mascot, creatively named 'Cat', which was created by famous Catalan siblings Carlos and Jordi Grangel to mark the Blaugrana's 125th anniversary.
Guardiola's performance comes amid the worst period of his career. The fact that it is only six games is a testament to his incredible resume. The former Barcelona and Bayer Munich boss is looking for his first win in over a month.
His side managed to end a run of five consecutive defeats on Tuesday evening, but their 3-3 draw against Feyenoord was perhaps the most worrying example of his side's current shortcomings. City led 3-0 at home against the Dutch side, but conspired to surrender their lead in the final 15 minutes of the match.
The match was also notable for the City boss's performance and commentary after the final whistle. Guardiola was asked at his post-match press conference about a cut on his nose, while scratches were also visible on his head and he joked that he “wanted to hurt himself” after the fall.
Guardiola apologized for a comment the next day, insisting he had no intention of making light of self-harm.
His team have the unenviable task of traveling to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, who have the chance to further burnish their title credentials and move 11 points clear of the defending champions after just 13 games.
He was adamant on Friday evening that he would take on the challenge of reviving his team, saying: 'People say, 'Pep, why isn't he in trouble? Why isn't he fired?'
“But what we've done over the last eight years is why I have this margin.
'The people here trust me. The moment I feel like I'm not positive for the club, another one comes along. The club will make the solution, the decision they have to make. But I wanted the chance to try it.
'I don't want to run away. I want to rebuild the team in many ways from now until the end of the season and next season, to try to continue there. I have to prove myself now.'
