Nico Wiliams’ ‘Old Trafford dream’ and Champions League promise to Athletic Club

Nico Williams has dropped a hint about the stay in Athletic Club after this summer if they are eligible for the UEFA Champions League.

Williams scored the second goal in Athletic Club's 2-0 Europa League Quarter Final Second Leg victory in Rangers to set up a last four confrontation with Manchester United.

The Basque side is currently in fourth place in La Liga – and in a strong position to qualify for the UCL via the domestic route – where Spain also receives a bonus fifth place for 2025/26.

Williams will be strongly linked to a switch from Bilbao in the coming months after choosing a switch to Barcelona last summer.

The 22-year-old is an important transfer target for Mikel Arteta in Arsenal, prepared to activate his release clause of € 60 million and possibly pay more in a structured deal.

Williams seemed to be ready to get away from his boys' club, but their ride in the Europa League – and the prospect to play Champions League football in the Estadio San Mames next season – turns his head.

“Every child wants to play at Old Trafford,” he told Diario, after landing a double header with the side of Ruben Amorim.

“We have the goal of winning the Europa League in our sights, and for next year we want to crush it in the Champions League!

“Little by little. I think our motto of going through every round has been to keep it 'on the Down Low' as the best way to go.

“We are doing very well, and we have to continue to reach the final.

“The Estadio San Mames deserves it [us in the final there] More than anyone. We did very well to reach the semi -final as we wanted.

“Now it's another step to the final, and hopefully we can get there.”
