Alonso concedes Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title defence is all but over

Bayer Leverkusen -Coach Xabi Alonso has admitted the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich, with his side now eight points on drift of the competition leaders with four games left.

Second placed Leverkusen, who won the domestic competition and cup double last season without defeat, with their only loss against Atalanta in the Europa League final, equalized a 78th minute to pull 1-1 away to St Pauli on Sunday.

They now have 64 points after 30 games, with Bayern top at 72 after their 4-0 win over Heidenheim.

Opta's supercomputer only acts a chance of 0.2% to maintain the title, and Alonso, which is strongly connected to a move to Real Madrid, admitted that the race is almost over.

“It is clear that it is not mathematically over, but we know that there are very, very few opportunities,” Alonso told a press conference.

“Too much draws this season. That is the reason. Now the gap is too big for Bayern. But we have to be realistic. It's not all over yet. This is not yet the end of the season.”

Forward Patrik Schick went into a free kick by Alex Grimaldo to give Leverkusen a 33rd minute lead with his 18th league goal of the campaign.

Although he had Germany International Florian Wirtz for the first time in the starting line -up since he sustained an ankle injury at the beginning of March, Leverkusen was no longer able to score.

And St. Pauli immediately made it when Carlo Boukhalfa made the error message of Lukas Hradecky initiative.

“In the second half, St. Pauli increased the pressure and we didn't think that last pass to score a second goal,” said Alonso.

“Then we admitted the goal and it's just not enough for us. This is as it is,” he said.

St. Pauli was worthy of their point because they have created opportunities worth more expected goals than Leverkusen, with 1.09 on the Away Side's 0.77, while they also had more efforts on goal, with five shots to four.

Despite the fact that it is a bitter evening for Alonso's Leverkusen, they stretched their undefeated run on the road in the Bundesliga to 32 consecutive games and are now only one match away from Bayern's equivalent record.
