Gasperini celebrates Atalanta’s season despite falling short to win Scudetto

Gian Piero Gasperini sees no reason to be disappointed about the “incredible” campaign of Atalanta.

Last season's Europa League winners looked good to challenge the Serie A title earlier in the season, but eventually fell away in recent weeks, with a Winless Run with four games that are expensive.

On Sunday's 1-0 win over AC Milan, however, ensured that Atalanta is in third place their last five games in a prime position to guarantee the qualification of Champions League.

Earlier in the day, Atalanta was put under pressure by Bologna's 1-0 win over leaders Inter, but Ederson's strike turned out to be decisive against Milan.

And Gasperini does not regret the Atalanta campaign.

“For me it is an incredible season, tonight's victory gives us the chance to reach the Champions League again, which is an extraordinary goal, fundamentally for Bergamo,” Gasperini told Dazn.

“The victory of Bologna could have been dangerous after he won at San Siro, gives us an incredible turning point.

“Let's not joke, how can you regret 64 points.

“It's true, we are seven points from the top two and this is due to the head-to-head games lost against the leaders.

“But from a technical point of view to think that Atalanta could play for the Scudetto, is a bit exaggerated. Take a look at the big teams behind us.”

Atalanta has put 36 points on the road this season, more than any other team in the Serie A.

Sunday's victory only marks the third opportunity that Atalanta has double the competition about Milan, after 2007-08 and 1940-41.

They are then confronted with relegation-threatened Lecce.
