Tottenham Hotspur suffered a home defeat against Nottingham Forest on Monday evening and could also stand in line to lose one of their senior stars in the summer transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has opened the door for a summer exit. The Argentina International is strongly connected to a summer switch to Atletico Madrid.
Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, first on loan and then permanent. He played more than 100 times for the club, although injuries have limited his involvement – especially this season, when he has been one of a number of regulars who spend time on the sidelines during a challenging campaign under Ange Postcoglou.
The defeat of Monday evening at home against Nottingham Forest was the 18th competition of the season of the South American of the season. His greatest absence came when he sustained a hamstring injury in December, so that he kept out of operation for more than two months.
Since the return at the beginning of March, Romero has broken the team for four of their six league games. The most recent of these, against Forest on Monday, did not see the Londoners completely recovering after early goals from Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood, the visitors on their way to a 2-1 victory.
With skipper son Heung-min absent, Romero also wore the bracelet for the quarterfinals of the Europa League triumph in Eintracht Frankfurt. European glory remains a target, but a recent interview suggested that the defender was not ready to make predictions about what could come afterwards.
“We are in the semi -final of the Europa League and I want to finish the season on a high note,” Romero is quoted by Los Edell. “Then we will see. My focus is always on growing and looking for new places to keep developing.”
As previously reported by Mirror Football, Atletico Madrid belongs to the clubs that love the defender. They could even push to land the player for the club of the club in June, where they were drawn in a group with Paris Saint-Germain, Botafogo and Seattle Sounders.
Romero played forest for 45 minutes before he and fellow center-back Micky van de Ven made a seat. Manager Postecoglou, however, said that it was always part of the plan to manage the minutes of players with recent injury problems, because his team comes in shape for the first stage of their European semi -final against Bodo/Glimt on 1 May.
“It was planned in advance for Van de Ven and Romero to play for 45 minutes and the same thing with Kulusevski and Odobert who have not played for a while,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports. “Everyone got through, I think. That's one thing, but we want to keep Momentum, but we missed that opportunity.
“It's a bit of a balance. We have to be ready for Thursday week, that's the big game for us. We must have all our players healthy and in good condition.”
