The Foxes were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday after their 1-0 defeat against Liverpool and Van Nistelrooy admitted that he is not sure whether his future lies at the club will be confirmed in the championship next season.
“I am waiting for the clarity of the club and how they want to continue,” he said, before he insisted he wanted to continue in his role. “It is the goal to lead the club. I have to wait for how the club sees things and take it from there.”
After he had already fired former manager Steve Cooper in November, the Dutchman could be the second head coach who leaves what has been a terrible season for the club. Captain Jamie Vardy has described his club's campaign as “miserable” and a “total shame” after their relegation of the Premier League that emphasizes the frustration of players, despite their promotion last season.
“No words I have can ever express my feelings of anger and sorrow with the way this season has disappeared. There are no apologies,” Vardy wrote on social media.
“After we have been to this club for so long, we experienced so many highlights and successes – and this season was nothing but miserable and for me personally, a total shame. It hurts and I know you feel it too.
“I am sorry for the fans. Sorry we have not performed.”
Fabregas is currently in charge of the Italian side Como and has brought the club to the 13th in the Serie A. The Spaniard could be the saving grace for leicester as reports that suggest that he returns to the English top flight. Leicester still has five games to go in this Premier League season, and whether Van Nistelrooy is at the helm for their next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers is unclear.
