Atletico Madrid has again seen how their defense has difficulty holding up in the decisive phases of the season, and after investing in Robin Le Normand last summer, a splash is again on the transfer market. With Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo de Paul and Julian Alvarez already in the Metropolitano, their 'dream' -signature for this summer is another Argentina -International: Cristian Romero.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender has seen his own season hinder this year by injuries, but not long ago was talked about as one of the best in the game. At the age of 26 he also goes into the flowering of his career. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have both viewed him this season, but Los Rojiblancos seems much more intention to make a movement and have already opened contacts with his camp.
Earlier this week, Romero himself fueled speculation by admitting in an interview that he would like to play in Spain, and if there was one place he would move to, it would be La Liga. However, it will not be an easy deal, with Tottenham Hotspur unlikely to give him up without a fight – for a start his reported price tag is around € 80 million.
According to prison offside, Spurs have also opened contract interviews with Romero with a view to holding him in the long term. They note that Atletico can be confronted with competition from one of the three Premier League parties that are also interested in the Argentina star, but Tottenham will do their best to keep Romero.
With two more years about his deal, it is no surprise that Spurs would like to open conversations, because it will weaken their negotiating position until 2026, both in the market and in contract discussions. If they cannot agree with a new deal with Romero, then that would certainly open the doors for a movement this summer.
