Barcelona has wanted to reduce their wage account in recent seasons, and again, director of Football Deco will focus as much on outputs this summer as at arrivals. With uncertainty about their salary limit, that becomes even more prominent. Andreas Christensen was a player that many had assumed they were on their way outside.
The Danish defender has been out of operation since the second game of the season and suffered from a problem with the tendon of Achilles who initially excluded him for four months. However, a second muscular injury also kept him out of operation for a month at the end of January, which means that he only played 26 minutes throughout the year. Christensen has been suitable for the last six games of Barcelona and in the team, but Flick has failed to call him.
Christensen looked like he could leave on loan in January and Brentford was supposedly interested in the 29-year-old before he was injured in the last days of the transfer market. With another year about his deal, and Deco makes it a priority that no player should go into that situation next season, he plans to sell or renew players who are currently, in particular Frenkie de Jong. However, there is no sign that he will renew the deal of Christensen, pointing to an exit.
Sport says that the Danish defender is not going to leave Barcelona. He would like to forget this season and watched his contract, with the aim of convincing Hansi film of his usefulness. Christensen and his agents will hold deco conversations about the issue at the end of the season.
It certainly seems like a difficult conversation. Christensen is currently at the bottom of the pecking order under five central defensive options, where Barcelona is also interested in free agent Jonathan Tah. There are questions about the future of Ronald Araujo, but certainly at the time of writing it seems that Christensen is not in their plans.
