Southampton 1-2 Fulham: Sessegnon’s stoppage-time winner keeps European hopes alive

Ryan Sessegnon scored a 92nd minute winner when Fulham hit back to beat Southampton 2-1 and keep their hope of European qualification alive.

Lowly Southampton seemed to surpass the record-dragon Premier League points of 11 that they share with the Derby County team of 2007-08 thanks to an early goal from Jack Stephens.

Stephens threw in the 14th minute on the episode of Ryan Manning to make the saints forward, two minutes after Willian came close with a nice, curled effort that drove just wide from the post.

Nevertheless, the wait of Southampton to lift itself from 11 points will have to continue if they suffer a late capitulation, fueled by the replacements of Marco Silva.

The lively Adama Traore Poeid Poeid, who hit the woodwork, but colleague -sub Emile Smith Rowe attracted Fulham level with a bent strike in the 72nd minute.

Smith Rowe and Raul Jimenez both went close to the visitors while they were looking for a late winner, but it was Sessegnon who finally delivered in the second minute of added time and planted an excellent dip in the top left corner of Traore's center.

The victory leaves Fulham in eighth place at 51 points, the same as the ninth place Brighton and two for Bournemouth, which prevents Manchester United on Sunday.

Data Debrief: Silva's Subs have set up a late show

After the equalizer of Smith Rowe, Fulham has now scored 15 Premier League goals via replacements this season-the joints by each team in one campaign, next to Arsenal (2009-10), Manchester City (2011-12) and Liverpool (2015-16).

Late drama has even been a recurring theme for Silva's side. The winner of Saturday marked Fulham's third 90th minute goal in the Premier League this season, more than any other team.

On the other hand, Southampton's late game misery continued. They have now admitted 11 goals after the 90th minute this season similar to the Premier League record of Burnley in 2018-19.

But Fulham was the full value for the victory on Saturday and produced a healthy expected goals (XG) value of 2.16, compared to the modest 0.56 xg of Southampton.
